Yes I think you have a very good point and you express it with a catchy phrase here. There is a whole Zen art to thinking ahead, and a couple of tendencies to watch out for. One has to avoid the tendency to think so far ahead that there is hardly any information to go on thus making you thinking just fantasy and one has to avoid the tendency to worry unduely about things. I have found over the years that in the face of incomplete information and ambiguity (that describes most situations) there is a tendency to see a future that is simply a reflection of your own worst fears.

A colleague of mine is a professional project manager; he heads up the project office of his company and he has a saying that is also a catchy phrase. It addresses these two tendencies; he says "Plan to the horizon you can see." That way you can think ahead and still have enough information to avoid pure fantasy and also avoid becoming caught in a reflection of your own fears.
It also means thinking ahead is a constant process on our journey through this world.

Nice - the lean sock drawer.

However, I would submit that we should also reduce the variety of socks - better stick to one or two types of white sock and one type of black sock. If you have lots of fancy dress socks, forced pairing at stage 7 might be better. We should also do 5S in the sock drawer...
